In the field of theory of knowledge, while Moore's standpoint is essentially empiricist, he rejects the sceptical conclusions that have often been drawn from empiricism. Although the exact relationship of sense data and material things continued to puzzle him, in the main he was prepared to come to the "defence of commonsense," to quote the title of one of his papers.
